Film Screening: El Pachuco: From Zootsuits to Lowrides

About this event
Directed by Joseph R. Camacho, the film explores elements of Chicano identity by documenting the organization and opening of Royal Chicano Air Force artist Jose Montoya’s 1977 exhibition Pachuco Art: An Historical Update. The film examines Chicano culture in the 1940s—from zootsuits and the Zootsuit Riots to gender roles and the emergence of the Pachuco as both cultural figure and target of racial violence. Through interviews with Montoya, discover how contemporary Chicanas/os are reclaiming a history largely written out of the record. Curator Terezita Romo will introduce the film.
